SuniBill specialises in high sustainable landscape practices and promotes local materials for local jobs to encourage a strong sense of 'Place'.

In a recent interview, he said ...

"...people have gradually moved towards celebrating the uniqueness of the New Zealand Landscape by integrating more NZ themes into designs for outdoor living spaces. I believe developing a well integrated 'sense of place' has become more important that trying to transplant tacky snippits of 'foreign culture' into our backyards. We should save those experiences for our overseas travel. "

"To succeed in landscaping, you need to have a pragmatic approach towards levels and use of space, have a good knowledge of both hard and soft (plants) materials, and you need to be skilled draughtsman in order to communicate and record your ideas with accuracy."

"Points of entry are very important. Be it websites or front doors, getting these right can have an impact on the success of a residential landscape or office. A good Landscape Designer will enhance the sense of arrival to someone's home or business premises by creating a strong visual first impression."

When asked what would be the three most important things in a garden plan,

  • Sense of space - designing to make an area feel bigger that it really is.
  • On sloping sites, it is most important that steps and ramps flow easily, both
    visually and ergonomically between levels
